And therefore, feel inclined to spread, as, if it has the end goal of convincing peoples to your “side,” then, well, it’s ok, right? I’m sure that’s what all your friends on the other side think too….

So how can we spot propaganda? James Corbett interviewed Mark Crispin Miller, a 20-year tenured professor in the Department of Media, Culture, and Communications at New York University, who regularly teaches courses on advertisement, film, and propaganda.

So, as he states, if it comes at you as “white” propaganda, i.e., a billboard, a tv commercial, or a political speech, we can recognize it relatively easy. But if it comes to you as “grey” propaganda, i.e., a news report, a medical study, or a speech from an “expert” in the field, then its much harder to spot.

One confounding factor which makes this particularly hard is if you only listen to one news source, or news from the outlets from the same “side”. Even widening your sources to take in both sides from the legacy media sources (what Mark calls mainstream media in the video), you still end up perhaps with a false idea of what the arguments are and what the solutions are (or if they are even necessary!)

So back to the question of how do we spot propaganda? One tactic is to take the other side, and see if you can effectively argue the facts against what you believe, then check to see if your opinion has changed. Another way is to continue to question any narrative including those you believe and ask to see if the facts add up.

Are there pristine sources that we can totally trust? Well, no. Thankfully the internet has created a bridge between many many more sources but they can be overwhelming. Let’s remember that censorship is the tool of big government/big corporations/big institution/academia to silence those “pesky” voices that may be saying, “What about that big ol’ elephant in the room?”

Therefore, Mark’s recommendation is to …. Go down the rabbit hole and start listening to voices that are suppressed, or discredited as “conspiracy theorists”, which is a term weaponized by the alphabet soup agencies to suppress the speech that they have labeled “disinformation” or now even worse “misinformation.” Marks definition of conspiracy theory is interesting, “Something that if true, you couldn’t handle it.” Wow.

Mark goes through his own personal journey of how he was convinced by the movie “An Inconvenient Truth” on climate change, but yet when he pulled on many of the grey propaganda strings, like the hockey stick graph, the polar bear narrative, and the great barrier reef catastrophe, he found that certain facts did not add up, even though on the whole he agreed with the premise of the climate change theory.

Totally false, or, at least not so black and white as I previously thought. Ouch. No problem, I will eat my humble pie, and continue to be curious, and continue to learn.
